So, our next challenge. Our building is being sold out from under us. This is the stage when you expect we’d start whining. “They can’t do this to us.” “This building is too important for heritage.” “Awwww, we were finally making it.”
Well, not here. Nobody wants to listen to us whine. Especially not us!
So, why aren’t we upset?
We stand to lose a lot out of this deal. We’ve put in all the time, energy and money we could scrape together. Cabin 12 is working. People know us and like us. We’ve got the best guests and best staff you could hope for. We’ve survived one near disaster after another.
And after all this struggle, it looks like the building will be demolished.
Well, here’s why we support redeveloping the Plaza Hotel.
First off, the existing landlords who are selling. They took a chance on a homeless guy who raised money on a Facebook page. They accepted late rent cheques and we wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t given us a chance. They are in pursuit of their dream. Who are we to stand in their way?
Second, oh man, this corner. It has been getting better and we’ve been a big part of the improvement. But we’re a few million dollars short of what it would take to bring it to the next level.
Third, the building is falling down. Working in it is a constant struggle. We are going to be out of it one day, one way or another. We are thankful for getting a few years to build our reputation and a following. We see this as a catalyst. It gets us moving and we know we’ll find the perfect spot.
Also, we like the look of the new design. Not that we know anything about architecture. But it looks good and will do wonders for revitalizing the area.
So, what’s in store for the Cabin?
Well, we’ll be moving one day. Our dream would be to stay in the same location for another year or two, then move out during construction and then move back into the same spot, but better.
There’s a spot for a restaurant in the new design. On the other hand, the new developers probably envision something closer to the Irish Times than to Cabin 12. Could we put together a place that was higher end but still Cabiny? Could we arrange the funding? It would be interesting to try.
But back to today’s reality. When we do have to move out, we want to move to another location downtown. It’s our community and we love being part of it.
